Head of Department at the Department of Plant and Environmental Sciences

As of August 1st, 2024, The Faculty of Science at the University of Copenhagen is looking for a visionary and motivating Head of Department for the Department of Plant and Environmental Sciences (PLEN) to ensure the continued development of the department.

With over 500 employees and a budget of approximately 350 million DKK, PLEN is one of the largest departments at the Faculty of Science (SCIENCE).

At PLEN, research-based education, basic research, and applied research in biotechnology, agricultural, and environmental sciences converge from the molecular level to ecosystems. The focus is on generating new knowledge relevant for achieving and maintaining sustainable food production, understanding, and influencing human impacts on key environmental processes, and meeting society's future needs for biobased products.

PLEN educates bachelor's, master's, and PhD students within the Department’s core disciplines and offers various forms of postgraduate and continuing education.

The department's researchers, professionals, and students contribute with their knowledge and expertise to solutions essential for society's and the world's future. PLEN aims to be internationally recognized for its research and education while simultaneously being an active partner in the green transition nationally and internationally.
 

Responsibilities and Profile of the Head of Department

As the Head of Department, you report to the Dean of SCIENCE and hold overall responsibility for the department's academic, financial, and personnel matters.

You lead the research and education strategic development of the department, working closely with the department's leadership team and other staff members, while also contributing to the implementation of KU's policies and strategy.

As the Head of Department, you must thrive at the intersection of research, education, innovation, communication, leadership, administration, and numerous research groups, with a fundamental understanding of the value of the department's diverse academic, cultural, and generational breadth.

The role of the Head of Department also involves efforts to open doors, build networks, and represent the department and faculty in various contexts.

To be considered for the position:

  • You must be motivated in the leadership role and have relevant experience as a research and personnel manager in a larger unit, preferably supplemented with a recognized leadership education.
  • You should be an experienced and internationally recognized researcher at a minimum associate professor level within one of the department's subject areas and have a broad understanding and interest in the department's other subject areas.

Terms and conditions of employment

Generally, the position of Head of Department will be on a fixed-term basis with a five-year period of employment and the possibility of an extension of up to three years. The appointment will be made in accordance with the collective agreement for academics employed by the state entered between the Ministry of Taxation and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (AC), as well as in accordance with the protocol covered by the collective agreement for academics employed by the state relating to heads of department and deans at universities.

For external applicants, academic assessment may be required in line with the executive order on university appointments.

The scope of any research and teaching activities will be negotiated and agreed with the Dean.


UCPH is in the process of designing a new shared administrative organisation at UCPH, which is expected to lead to changes within the next 12 - 18 months. The purpose of the administrative reform is, among other things, to strengthen cross-organisational cooperation, increase efficiency, and ensure good career paths for administrative staff members at UCPH. The reform will lead to cutbacks on administration.
