Assistant Professor of Geophysics
The University of Copenhagen seeks an Assistant Professor of geophysics with expertise in using geophysical methods and theory to understand structures and physical properties within the Earth’s crust. The position is open for two years, starting 1 October 2025 or as soon as possible thereafter.
The successful candidate should have, or show potential for, a strong track record demonstrating both theoretical developments and application in geophysics. Documented experience with the processing and interpretation of 2D and 3D reflection seismic data and integration with well log data, and/or with geological interpretation of geophysical data related to e.g. sedimentary structures and structural geology is considered advantageous. Research and teaching expertise in disciplines that address current societal challenges such as resource exploration and challenges, geohazards, geological carbon storage, climate change, and the green transition will also be advantageous.
The geology section has a long tradition of teaching and research in geophysics, including applied geophysics. The section has access to shallow marine and onshore geophysical equipment, georadar systems for surface and cross-borehole recordings, multi-electrode geoelectrical systems, and instrumentation for magnetic field recordings. It will thus be an advantage if the candidate already has some experience with such or similar instruments and can apply them in research, innovation and teaching.
The assistant professor’s duties will primarily include research, including obligations with regard to publication/scientific communication and research-based teaching with associated examination obligations within geophysics. To a limited extent this may also include performance of other duties.
Assessment of applicants
Will primarily consider their level of documented, internationally competitive research. The ability to attract external funding will be considered together with outreach qualifications. Teaching qualifications are not mandatory but documented teaching qualifications and teaching experience will be considered.
Six overall criteria apply for assistant professor appointments at the University of Copenhagen. The six criteria (research, teaching, societal impact, organisational contribution, external funding and leadership) are considered a framework for the overall assessment of candidates. Furthermore, each candidate must be assessed according to the specific requirements stated in the job advertisement.
