Start package programme

The University of Copenhagen (UCPH) is recognised as a leading European university with a strong foundation in fundamental research, innovation, and research-based education across a broad range of academic fields. UCPH therefore seeks to appoint outstanding researchers by providing a start package as well as support for applications for extramural funding.

Denmark has a highly appealing funding landscape with ample access to public and private research funding. As a newly appointed researcher at UCPH, you will receive substantial support to navigate and apply for Danish and other extramural grants, thereby strengthening your opportunity to establish yourself as an internationally leading researcher at UCPH.

For selected recruitments, UCPH also offers selected appointees support as part of the UCPH start package programme. The grant is available to the appointed researcher for a period of up to four years.

The start package grant may be used for:

  • Salary for employees such as technicians, postdoctoral researchers, and PhD students
  • Tuition fees
  • Expenses related to relocation and, if relevant, lab establishment and refurbishment
  • Operating expenses such as consumables and access to computing/experimental facilities
  • Equipment, infrastructure, and data storage
  • Travel and conference participation, field work
  • Publication costs, including Open Access fees
  • Buy-out of research time, where relevant.

The opportunity to negotiate a start package grant from the UCPH start package programme is available for selected faculty positions and UCPH must be your main employment. Only positions explicitly posted with the possibility of negotiating a UCPH start package are eligible. The negotiation takes place as part of the standard recruitment process between the applicant and the relevant head of department or Dean.

Should you obtain external funding for similar research activities, then UCPH will collaborate with you to transfer the associated costs to the external funding source.

International faculty service

International recruitees have the option to utilise the comprehensive International Faculty Service of UCPH’s International Staff Mobility (ISM) office.

The office provides individual and tailored support for academic staff at faculty level – that is, professors, associate professors, and assistant professors – both before and after a job offer has been accepted. This includes dual career support.
