Postdoc of kmer-based population genomics

Although a number of computational tools exist for the analysis of population scale genome datasets, these are often computationally intensive. In response to this, a number of developments have recently been made in the use of k-mer based methods as a more resource-efficient tool (for example https://doi.org/10.1186/s13059-019-1632-4). While such methods show promise when applied to in silico generated datasets, their performance on real datasets is less well understood. The 18 month postdoctoral position advertised here was created as part of the DIVERSEA consortium (https://www.ntnu.edu/diversea), to address this issue, through exploration of the potential of several recent k-mer based tools on real biological datasets, and in doing so identify future developments that are needed in the area. This position is based in the group of Prof Tom Gilbert at the Globe Institute, with additional collaboration with Assoc Prof Siavash Mirarab at the University of California San Diego.

The postdoc’s duties will principally include research within kmer-based population genomics as well as teaching. Hence they are expected to have documented experience in the application of state of the art computational population genomic tools, with a particular focus on its application to vertebrate species.

Further information on the Department is linked at https://globe.ku.dk/ . Inquiries about the position can be made to Prof Tom Gilbert (tgilbert@sund.ku.dk).

The position is open from 1st September 2025 or as soon as possible thereafter.
