Postdoc in the Family and Sexual Health Group at the Department of Public Health
We are looking for a highly motivated and dynamic postdoc for a 2-year position (with possible extension) in family and sexual health. The start date is negotiable, but we anticipate Fall 2023.

The Family and Sexual Health group is housed within the Section of Environmental Health, in the Department of Public Health (see specifically https://publichealth.ku.dk/about-the-department/environment/psychology/). The group seeks to put an empirical focus on what contributes to a positive family and sexual life. Dissatisfaction, problems, and discord related to family and relationship life is normal. But if these become too intense, disruptive, or extends over longer periods of time, research consistently finds them closely tied with reduced mental and physical health, lower quality of life, lower productivity, feelings of insecurity, and increases in sick days and hospitalization. Within the group, we have several core areas of study:
- Prevention and treatment of dynamics that may lead to intimate partner violence
- Adjustment to divorce, for children and adults
- The impact of mental illness within the family unit
- Predictors of sexual health and wellness
We are an interdisciplinary and multi-national research group, consisting of two full professor, an associate professor, an industrial postdoc, and two international (dual-degree) PhD students. Besides the core group at UCPH, we have an extensive international network of collaborators across Europe (e.g., Norway, Croatia), Australia (researchers at Deakin University), and the US (researchers at Rutgers University and University of Mississippi).
We use a variety of methods, including cross-sectional and longitudinal survey methodology, register data, randomized controlled trial and experimental designs, and mixed methods.
You will be part of multiple ongoing projects that are all centered around family and sexual health. You will primarily work on projects related to divorce. These projects include examining the long-term effects of a digital post-divorce intervention in terms of utilization of the health care system (in collaboration with the Rockwool Foundation) and testing of a new digital intervention for children of divorce and relationship dissolution. Additionally, you may have the opportunity to work on projects that investigate the effects of having a child with a psychiatric diagnosis on parental mental health and PTSD symptomology (in collaboration with Deakin University). There will also be the potential to contribute to the development and design of new projects related to intimate partner violence and sexual functioning and distress in couples.
Your tasks would be related to manuscript writing, grant writing, as well as (quantitative and/or qualitative) data analysis. These tasks will be executed in collaboration with and under mentorship of Gert Martin Hald and Camilla S. Øverup. As part of the position, you may also be required to teach within the course offerings covered by the Section of Environmental Health.
We are looking for a highly motivated and enthusiastic scientist with the following competencies and experience:
Essential experience and skills:
- You have a PhD in psychology, sociology, public health, or related field.
- You are highly experienced in academic writing, as demonstrated by scientific publications
- You have an active interest in family science
- You have a thorough understanding of statistical analyses, with demonstrated data analysis experience
- Proficient communication skills, particularly excellent English skills written and spoken
- Ability to work in interdisciplinary and multi-national teams, but also to work independently
Desirable experience and skills:
- Experience with the analysis of data from the Danish registers
- Experience with qualitative data analysis
- Experience in grant writing
Place of employment
The place of employment is within the Family and Sexual Health Group at the Department of Public Health, University of Copenhagen. We offer creative and stimulating working conditions in dynamic and international research environment. We are located at the historic ‘Kommunehospital’, in the center of Copenhagen (near Nørreport Station). Our facilities include spacious and sunlit offices and a local-use tea-kitchen, with a state-of-the-art coffee machine.
Terms of employment
The average weekly working hours are 37 hours per week.
The position is a fixed-term position limited to a period of 2 years (with possible extension).
Salary, pension and other conditions of employment are set in accordance with the Agreement between the Ministry of Taxation and AC (Danish Confederation of Professional Associations) or other relevant organization. Currently, the monthly salary starts at 35,000 DKK/approx. 4,700 EUR (April 2023 level). Depending on qualifications, a supplement may be negotiated. The employer will pay an additional 17.1 % to your pension fund.
Foreign and Danish applicants may be eligible for tax reductions, if they hold a PhD degree and have not lived in Denmark the last 10 years.
The position is covered by the Job Structure for Academic Staff at Universities 2020.
