Job description
In the consideration of applications for the professorship, the main emphasis will be on the applicant's ability to document a high level of original scientific work at an international level within the area of rehabilitation and/or palliative medicine.

According to the WHO, the target group for palliative care has been expanded to include all patients and relatives with serious and life-threatening illnesses, which the Danish Health Authority has agreed to. However, the development challenges the historically narrow understanding of palliation as relief for cancer patients in the terminal phase. There is therefore a need to expand the target group, as well as early palliative care and a combination of rehabilitation and palliative medicine.

The clinical professorship will focus on continuing the solid research tradition of the hospital and the University of Copenhagen in palliative medicine and expanding the research field to also include other serious diseases. With the establishment of a professorship in rehabilitation and palliation, the University of Copenhagen will lead the way with research and development that can ensure that the rehabilitation and palliation offered in Denmark will be evidence-based in line with other treatment in the healthcare system.

The professor’s responsibilities will primarily consist of:

  • Research, including publication/academic dissemination
The research must be broadly based and preferably on the development of complex clinical interventions comprising systematic reviews, registry studies, intervention development and RCT, as well as health economics evaluations and implementation research.
  • Research-based teaching, including associated examination of students having clinical semesters and in relevant theoretical courses in the curriculum of medical studies
  • Research leadership, including guidance and supervision of bachelor and master students as well as PhD students
  • Obligation to share knowledge with the rest of society, including participation in public debate
  • Academic assessments

Required qualifications
Six overall criteria apply for professor appointments at the University of Copenhagen. The six criteria (research, teaching, societal impact, organisational contribution, external funding and leadership) are considered a framework for the overall assessment of candidates. Find information about each criterion here: https://employment.ku.dk/faculty/criteria-for-recognising-merit.

Furthermore, each applicant must be able to:

  • Document a high degree of original academic production at an international level, including considerable contributions to the development of the academic discipline
  • Manage research and other management functions, e.g. engage in the university’s external academic activities, as well as knowledge and technology transfer
  • Provide research-based teaching

The professor is also required to possess good interpersonal and communicative skills.

Terms of employment
The position is a fixed-term position limited to a period of five years.

For the professorship the appointee will receive a pensionable annual salary of 196,430.88 (1 October 2022 level).

The position is covered by the Job Structure for Academic Staff at Universities 2020.
