Research Assistant for the Arumugam Group

The Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Basic Metabolic Research
Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences
University of Copenhagen

We are looking for an experienced and motivated Research Assistant with experience in microbial culture and molecular biology techniques to support the work of the Arumugam Group at The Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Basic Metabolic Research (CBMR) to start March 1, 2022, or after agreement.

Our research
The Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Basic Metabolic Research’s vision is to strengthen interdisciplinary research that transforms our basic understanding of the mechanisms that underlie metabolic health and disease, and to accelerate this knowledge toward new prevention and treatment strategies. We were established in 2010 and in 2017, we moved into new laboratories, offices, and meeting rooms in the Maersk Tower www.maersktower.ku.dk.

The Center has around 260 employees who work in an international, highly collaborative research environment across a range of biomedical disciplines. You can read more about us here: www.cbmr.ku.dk.

Our group and research
The Arumugam Group investigates how health and diseases are influenced by our gut microbiome; how the gut microbiome interacts with the host and environmental factors, and how we can therapeutically modulate the gut microbiome to improve health. More information about the group can be found at Microbiome Systems Biology in the Arumugam Group.

Your job
We are currently looking for a Research Assistant to assist us in our work aimed at identifying novel bioactive metabolites produced by the human gut microbiota and unravelling the underlying complex metabolic networks. The candidate will work on characterizing gut microbiota by growing them in in vitro settings such as gut simulators, batch fermenters, culture flasks and micro-titer plates. The candidate will also be involved in performing extraction of DNA, RNA, and metabolites from in vitro microbial cultures for metagenomics, metatranscriptomics and metabolomics analysis.

Your profile
Criteria:

  • A relevant master’s degree e.g., within Microbiology, Biology, Biotechnology, Biochemistry or Molecular Biomedicine
  • Active interest in microbiome research, isolation of microorganisms, and culturing anaerobic microorganisms.
  • Experience in handling in vitro gut simulators such as SHIME, TIM system, etc.
  • Experience in molecular biology techniques such extraction of DNA and RNA from complex microbial communities, running qPCRs.
  • Experience in performing high-throughput screening bioassays for quantification/identification of compounds of interest.
  • Experience with analytical techniques such as HPLC (desired, but not essential).
  • Strong collaborative skills, excellent written and oral communication skills in English.

Place of employment
The place of employment is the Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Basic Metabolic Research, Maersk Tower, Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen. We offer creative and stimulating working conditions in a dynamic and international research environment.

Terms of salary and employment
The employment as Research Assistant is a full-time fixed-term position for 1 year. Starting date is March 1, 2022, or after agreement.

Employment will be in accordance with the provisions of the collective agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and AC (the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations). The monthly salary will be based on the number of years of work experience (seniority) with the possibility to negotiate a salary supplement based on prior experiences and qualifications.
