It covers all disciplines of food science from raw materials to processing and consumption, and is organized in four sections, one of which is the section for “Food Microbiology and Fermentation”, where the position is placed. Gut microbiome research is a strong focus area and during the last 5 years the viruses residing in the gastrointestinal tract (bacteriophages as well as archaeal and eukaryotic viruses) and their interactions with their microbiological hosts as well as the mammalian host has become a particular research focus. Further information about the Department can be found at https://food.ku.dk/ .

Methane (CH4) is a powerful greenhouse gas produced in ruminants via methanogensis (CO2 + 4 H2 → CH4 + 2 H2O), a form of anaerobic respiration only known to be conducted by methanogenic archaea, mainly Methanobrevibacter. This archaea is highly abundant in high methane emitting cows and a major methane-producer. The post doc project aim to develop and use archaeal viruses to reduce ruminant Archaea abundance thereby reducing methane production.
The position is open from 1st December 2020 or as soon as possible thereafter.
The preferred candidate holds a PhD within microbiology or related research fields. The project will contain substantial wet-lab work. It is therefore expected that the candidate has strong wet-lab experience. Furthermore, it is expected that the candidate has strong qualifications within several of the following areas:
