PhD fellowship in poor performance in the athletic horse at the Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences

We are offering a PhD fellowship in equine exercise physiology emphasis equine cardiology commencing 31.12.2020 or as soon as possible hereafter.
Our group and research
The Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences is subdivided into seven sections and the PhD fellow will be included in the Section for Medicine and Surgery based at Taastrup Campus. The Section's priorities are clinically applied research in large animal diseases and welfare (equine, bovine and small ruminants) as well as clinical and didactic teaching.
The PhD fellow will be part of an international network of dedicated researchers specialized in cardiology and equine medicine with emphasis on equine cardiology. (www.ecg.ku.dk). This study relies on advanced diagnostics such as atrial mapping and loop recorder implantation already established in our research group.
Poor performance in horses is one of the most important problems in equine industry and can have a wide variability of reasons, for example respiratory, cardiovascular or muscular disorders. Aim of the project is poor performance evaluation with focus on arrhythmias (here especially atrial fibrillation) but also other possible reasons for poor performance. The project will be composed of two main work packages:
- Prevalence of paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (PAF) in healthy horses. Loop recorders will be implanted in a number of horses (standardbreds and warmblood horses), which are followed over a period of time. Work-Up of the horses includes ECG and Echo as well as endocardial biopsies in a selected number of cases.
- Causes of poor performance in horses. In order to elucidate underlying causes of poor performance horses presented with poor performance in the clinic are included in this prospective clinical study. All horses will be enrolled in a standardised protocol including advanced cardiovascular diagnostics, Airway evaluation muscular evaluation and biomarkers of inflammation.
These investigations will hopefully lead to new insight in the occurrence and treatment of disorders leading to poor performance in horses.

Duration: 3 years as a PhD student
Your key tasks as a PhD student at SUND are:
- Carry through an independent research project under supervision
- Complete PhD courses or other equivalent education corresponding to approx. 30 ECTS points
- Participate in active research environments including stays at another research team and international travel
- Obtain experience with teaching or other types of dissemination related to your PhD project
- Teach and disseminate your knowledge
- Write a PhD thesis on the grounds of your project
Key criteria for the assessment of applicants
- Qualifications corresponding to a master’s degree in veterinary medicine (DVM)
- Fluency in written and spoken English. Danish knowledge is an advantage but not absolutely necessary
- Drivers license

- Published work
- Postgraduate or relevant work experience
- Internship or equivalent

Terms of employment
The employment as PhD fellow is full time and for 3 years.
It is conditioned upon the applicant’s successful enrolment as a PhD student at the Graduate School at the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen. This requires submission and acceptance of an application for the specific project formulated by the applicant
The PhD study must be completed in accordance with The Ministerial Order on the PhD programme and the Faculty’s rules on achieving the degree. Salary, pension and terms of employment are in accordance with the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and The Danish Confederation of Professional Associations on Academics in the State. Depending on seniority, the monthly salary begins around 27.590 DKK /approx. 3.700 EUR (April 2020-level) plus pension.
