PhD fellowship in subcellular targeting of optogenetic probes

One PhD fellowship in subcellular targeting of optogenetic probes is available at Department of Biomedical Sciences, University of Copenhagen. The fellowship is available from March 1st, 2019, or as soon as possible thereafter.
The project
Optogenetics is a powerful biological technique that allows scientists to track and manipulate neuronal activity leading to unprecedented insight into neuronal functions. This project aims to extend the optogenetic toolbox by generating a wide palette of optogenetic probes that display specific subcellular localizations in neurons.
Scientific environment
The candidate will be part of the Membrane Trafficking group headed by Associate Professor Hanne Borger Rasmussen. The Membrane Trafficking group is embedded within the Ion Channel Group at Department of Biomedical Sciences. We offer an interesting and challenging job in an international environment focusing on ion channel research. The research focus of the Membrane Trafficking group is on the subcellular organization of ion channels in neurons, how this organization is established and regulated and how deficits in ion channel organization contribute to neurological disease. The specific project is conducted in close collaboration with a research laboratory at University of California (UC) Davis, California, USA and 6-12 months of the PhD project is to be carried out at UC Davis.
Your key tasks
Carry through the described research project under supervision
Complete PhD courses or other equivalent education corresponding to approx. 30 ECTS points
Participate in active research environments including a stay of 6-12 months at UC Davis, California, USA
Conduct teaching or other types of dissemination related to your PhD project
Key criteria for the assessment of candidates
The successful candidate will have a masters’ degree (or equivalent) in biology, biochemistry, molecular biology or related. Experimental laboratory experience and proficiency in both written and spoken English is required, and candidates with international publications and experience related to the research topics of the position outlined above will be given preference. Further, part of the research project is to be conducted at UC Davis, California, USA, thus an international mindset is expected.
Other selection criteria considered important
  • The grade point average achieved
  • A genuine interest in neuroscience and strong work ethics
  • Strong motivation and excellent scientific skills
  • Good communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Experience with one or more of the following techniques/topics is an advantage: molecular cloning techniques, neuronal cell culture, electrophysiology, confocal imaging, optogenetic probes, neuronal cell biology research
Place of employment
Department of Biomedical Sciences, The Panum Institute, University of Copenhagen.
Formal requirements
The appointment as a PhD fellow is fulltime for 3 years. It is conditioned upon the candidate’s successful enrolment in the PhD school at the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen.
The PhD study must be completed in accordance with The Ministerial Order on the PhD programme (2013) and the University’s rules on achieving the degree.
Terms of employment
Salary, pension and terms of employment are in accordance with the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and The Danish Confederation of Professional Associations on Academics in the State. Depending on seniority, the monthly salary begins around 26.886,84 DKK /approx. 3.567 EUR (October 2018-level) plus pension.
