Postdoc position in disordered proteins and their interplay with extracellular proteoglycans

The Ploug-group at the Finsen Laboratory is looking for a highly motivated postdoc to join a project on acidic disordered proteins and their impacts on heparin-binding proteins. The postdoc position is a fulltime limited initially for 2 years, starting 1 September 2023 or soon thereafter.

This is a highly interdisciplinary project between four research institutions with expertise in bioinformatics, mass spectrometry, NMR, and biochemistry/cell biology. The Finsen Laboratory hosts six research groups and is located in the Copenhagen Biocenter with an affiliation to Copenhagen University Hospital (Rigshospitalet) as well as BRIC at the University of Copenhagen.

Information on the Ploug-group can be found at:

Our research
The Ploug-group focuses on the biochemical and biophysical characterization of disease-relevant proteins and their ligands. We provide a detailed understanding of how a given pathway maintains homeostasis in normal physiology and why certain aberrations—such as missense mutations and natural polymorphisms—cause dysregulation resulting in pathophysiology. To achieve these goals we have state-of-the-art facilities for protein production and analytical tools such as SPR, MST, nano-DSF, MALDI-TOF/TOF MS, CD, and SEC-MALS for biochemical characterization.

Your job
The successful applicant will focus on characterizing the interplay between disordered acidic proteins and the extracellular matrix. Initial studies on proteins involved in intravascular lipolysis (GPIHBP1 and LPL) will be used to define further studies on disordered acidic proteins selected by bioinformatics.

We are looking for a highly motivated and enthusiastic scientist with the following competencies and experience:

  • You have a PhD in biochemistry, molecular biology, cell biology or similar
  • You are highly experienced in protein expression and purification
  • You are highly experienced in one or more of the following techniques: eukaryote cell culture, co-IP for mass spectrometry identification, western blot, surface plasmon resonance, working with mouse models.
  • Prior publication in internationally recognized journals to which you have contributed significantly
  • Proficient communication skills and ability to work in teams
  • Excellent English skills, both written and spoken
  • A FELASA accredited ABD certificate is an advantage

Place of employment
The employment is at BRIC, University of Copenhagen. BRIC is located in the Biocenter, close to the centre of Copenhagen. We offer creative and stimulating working conditions in a dynamic and international research environment.

Terms of employment
Salary, pension and other conditions of employment are set in accordance with the Agreement between the Ministry of Taxation and AC (Danish Confederation of Professional Associations) or other relevant organisation. Currently, the monthly salary starts at 35,000 DKK/approx. 4,700 EUR (October 2021 level). Depending on qualifications, a supplement may be negotiated. The employer will pay an additional 17.1 % to your pension fund.

Foreign and Danish applicants may be eligible for tax reductions, if they hold a PhD degree and have not lived in Denmark the last 10 years.

The position is covered by the Job Structure for Academic Staff at Universities 2020.

Key criteria for the assessment of applicants
Applicants must have qualifications corresponding to a Master’s degree (equivalent of the Danish candidate, 3+2 years) related to the subject area of the project e.g. medicine.

Application procedure
Your online application must be submitted in English by clicking ‘Apply now’ below. Furthermore, your application must include the following documents/attachments – all in PDF format:

  1. Motivated letter of application (max. one page).
  2. CV incl. education, work/research experience, language skills and other skills relevant for the position.
  3. A certified/signed copy of a) PhD certificate and b) Master of Science certificate. If the PhD is not completed, a written statement from the supervisor will do.
  4. List of publications with description of the personal contributions to each work.

Application deadline:  11 June 2023
We reserve the right not to consider material received after the deadline, and not to consider applications that do not live up to the abovementioned requirements.

The further process
After the expiry of the deadline for applications, the authorized recruitment manager selects applicants for assessment on the advice of the hiring committee.
