(211-0569) Associate Professor in Physical Geography

Associate Professor in Physical Geography focused on hydrology of the unsaturated zone
Department of Geosciences and Natural Resource Management
Faculty of Science
University of Copenhagen
An associated professorship within physical geography is open. The position has a strong focus on near-surface hydrology processes mainly in permafrost-affected regions and includes both field and modelling aspects of Arctic/cold region hydrology.
The candidate is expected to contribute to the cross-disciplinary research and teaching of the Terrestrial Ecosystem Analyses Research Group under the Section of Geography. Specifically, the position will complement the current research activities in the Arctic within the Centre for Permafrost (CENPERM), linking landscape history, near-surface water flow, net ecosystem water and energy balance at local and regional scales. Please see www.cenperm.ku.dk for further information regarding CENPERM. Moreover, the candidate is expected to contribute to the general education in physical geography as well as strengthen and further develop education in near-surface hydrology in cold regions, including climate change aspects of hydrology, extreme events, and water budgets at both BSc-, MSc- and PhD-levels in Geography and at MSc-level in the Climate Change MSc Program (CCIMA).
Applicants are required to have university level teaching experience, documented teaching competencies and must be able to explain and reflect upon own teaching practice and portfolio. Formal pedagogical training or supervision equivalent to the University of Copenhagen teacher training programme for assistant professors is required. In addition, applicants are expected to have a strong record of research including both field measurements and modelling. Research experience within hydrology of the unsaturated zone in the Arctic/cold regions will be considered a strong asset.
Duties include the applicant’s own research, development of the field, assessment tasks, grant applications, and research management such as supervision and training of research fellows and other staff. The successful applicant must also teach, supervise, prepare and participate in examinations, and fulfil other tasks requested by the Department.
Assessment of applicants will primarily consider their level of documented, original scientific production at an international level, including contributions to developments in their field, as well as their documented teaching qualifications. Managerial and out-reach qualifications of applicants including the ability to attract external funding will also be considered.
At CENPERM, more than twenty staff members, PhD-students and Master students are focussing on soil, plant and microbial interactions across climate zones across multiple sites in Greenland. The centre is interdisciplinary and hosts researchers from the Department of Geosciences and Natural Resource Management and the Department of Biology. The centre is located in the heart of Copenhagen city and has over the past six years published more than 200 peer-reviewed publications. It is hosted by the Section for Geography at the Department of Geosciences and Natural Resource Management.
Further information on the Department is linked at https://www.science.ku.dk/english/about-the-faculty/organisation/. Inquiries about the position can be made to Bo Elberling, professor and director of CENPERM, be@ign.ku.dk.
