Technical Assistant (Academic Employee), Flow Cytometry Research Platform

The Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Stem Cell Biology – DanStem was established as a result of a series of international recruitments coupled with internationally recognized research groups focused on insulin producing beta cells and cancer research already located at the University of Copenhagen. DanStem addresses basic research questions in stem cell and developmental biology and has activities focused on the translation of promising basic research results into new strategies and targets for the development of new therapies for cancer and chronic diseases such as diabetes and liver failure. The Technical Assistant (academic employee) will work within the Flow Cytometry Research Platform, a shared-resource laboratory jointly financed by DanStem and the NNF Center for Protein Research (CPR, The platform manages one BD LSR Fortessa analyser and three cell sorters including a BD FACS Aria III and two Sony SH800 instruments.  The platform is managed by a flow cytometry specialist who oversees the use and maintenance of the instruments for CPR and Danstem and will be the immediate supervisor of the technical assistant. 
CPR and Danstem are technically and internationally diverse and dynamic research centers that emphasize collaboration.  We are now looking for a highly motivated and qualified technical assistant to work in our Flow Cytometry Research Platform. All duties will be in close collaboration with the platform manager, together with facility users from both CPR and Danstem. 
Job Description 
  • Participate in the general operation and maintenance of the platform, including calibrating the instruments, maintaining booking schedule for users, and maintaining instruments 
  • Assist in the ordering, receiving, and sending of materials required  
  • Introduce students, postdocs, and lab technicians to instrumentation 
  • Assist users in designing and carrying out experiments on analyzer and sorter instruments  
  • Carry out any other duties that may reasonably be associated with the position  
Start date: August 1st 2018. 
Essential experience and skills 
  • Proficient in cell culture and aseptic technique 
  • Computer proficiency (Word, Excel, Powerpoint) 
  • Good communication skills in English, both oral and written – all communication will be in English 
  • Enthusiasm, integrity, motivation, flexibility, confidence, commitment to quality, interest in new methods/techniques 
  • Ability to work with people

  • Enjoys trouble-shooting 
  • Strong interest in flow cytometry and cell sorting 
  • Characterization of primary antibodies for flow cytometry 
  • Experience in multi-color flow cytometry including knowledge of FMO controls and compensation 
  • Experience with Flowjo and/or other flow cytometry analysis programs 
Relevant academic degree is required.  Experience with flow cytometry in a core facility will be considered a distinct advantage.  
Place of employment and work 
The place of employment is at DanStem in the Panum Institute, University of Copenhagen, located in central Copenhagen. The environment at DanStem and CPR is vibrant, ambitious, and international, with approx. 30 different nationalities currently represented. The Centers house modern laboratories with state-of-the-art facilities. 
Terms of salary and employment 
The position is a full time position (37 h/w). Employment will be in accordance with the provisions of the collective agreement between the Danish Government and AC. In addition, a monthly contribution of 17.1% of the salary is paid into a pension fund.
