PhD stipend in dopaminergic and noradrenergic circuits responsible for attention and impulsivity

A time-limited 3-year PhD position at Laboratory for Molecular Neuropharmacology and Genetics, Department of Neuroscience is available as soon as possible. The aim of the project is to use advanced viral techniques to investigate how dopaminergic and noradrenergic circuits together controls key behavioral parameters such as attention and impulsivity with relevance to disorders like ADHD.

The PhD student will work with advanced viral techniques enabling project-specific expression of opsins (optogenetics), DREADDs (designer receptors exclusively activated by designer drugs, chemogenetics) and/or ion channels in mice to control neuronal activity. The mice will be analyzed in a variety of behavioral paradigms (e.g. 5-choice serial reaction time task). The behavioral analyses will be combined with in vitro analyses (e.g. immunohistochemistry, microscopy, electrophysiology, biochemical assays, pharmacological assays etc.)

In connection with the appointment to the post, special importance will be attached to the applicant having the following professional and personal qualifications:

  • A Master’s degree in biochemistry, molecular biomedicine, human biology or in an equivalent area
  • Experience with viral expression techniques including generation and production of virus constructs (AAVs)
  • Experience with stereotactic injections in mouse brain
  • Experience with handling of genetic mouse models
  • Experience with mouse behavioral models relevant for neuropsychiatric diseases
  • Experience with microscopy and immunohistochemistry
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral

All highly motivated and ambitious candidates, regardless of their personal background and status, are encouraged to apply.

The position is offered for a period of three years and employment is governed by the Protocol on PhD Research Fellows signed by the Danish Ministry of Finance and AC (the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations). In addition to research activities, the PhD candidate will be expected – during the period of the stipend – to acquire experience in teaching and/or other types of presentations.
