Assistant Professor in Companion Animal Dermatology and General Medicine

Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences, Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences at the University of Copenhagen invites applications for a position as Assistant Professor in companion animal dermatology and general practice commencing on March 1st 2018, or as soon as possible thereafter.

The Department of VeterinaryClinical Sciences covers strong and internationally recognized research areas in veterinary clinical sciences. Our research supports teaching in a manner and quality securing continued national and international bench marking. The Sectionfor Medicine, Oncology and Veterinary Clinical Pathology´s joint research area is the inter-dependency between inflammation and hemostasis as part of the innate immune defense, development of assays for predictive biomarkers in companion animal and comparative medicine, clinical nutrition and metabolic consequences of obesity in dogs and cats as well as research in prudent use of antibiotics in companion animal practice. 
 
Job description 
In considering applications for the assistant professorship, the main emphasis will be on the applicant's ability to document a high level of original scientific work on an international level within the area of companion animal dermatology. 
 
Companion animal dermatology is an internationally recognized discipline within veterinary sciences. In close collaboration with the general medicine service it is considered key to the continued successful development of the Department of Veterinary Clinical Science’s research and teaching. Research in companion animal medicine has become increasingly important and it is believed dermatology is a promising new research area for the department. The veterinary curriculum includes theoretical lectures, propadeutical teaching as well as clinical training. Veterinary dermatology is integrated both through theoretical lectures and hands on clinical service/training. The assistant professor in dermatology and general medicine will be expected to lead a specialized clinical dermatology service as well as to partake in the continued research based development of preclinical and clinical teaching and the continuous development of the clinical services within dermatology and general medicine.

Duties 
The Assistant Professor’s duties will primarily consist of: 
  • research, including obligations with regard to publication/scientific communication  
  • research-based teaching with associated examination duties as well as clinical service within companion animal dermatology and to some extent general medicine
  • communication of research results to the public
  • peer assessment 
  • administration, primarily in relation to teaching, research and service  
Required qualifications
  • a PhD degree or similar qualifications in relation to the above subject area 
  • research and teaching experience within the field of the position. Strong research experience within the field of companion animal dermatology is desirable
  • Candidates with international experience and established international scientific network is desirable
  • DVM degree and Danish authorization to practise veterinary medicine  
  • Documented clinical competencies on a generalist as well as at a specialized level within companion animal practice. Clinical experience within the field of dermatology and general medicine is desirable
  • Documented ability to establish external collaborations and funding is desirable
  • Ability and desire to communicate, promote and consult within companion animal dermatology, general and internal medicine
  • If the new assistant professor does not master a Nordic language, it is expected that the person concerned acquire a working knowledge of the Danish language 

The Assistant Professor is also required to be enterprising and to possess good interpersonal skills. 

Terms of employment 
Salary and other terms and conditions of appointment are set in accordance with the Agreement between the Ministry of Finance and AC (Danish Confederation of Professional Associations) or other relevant professional organisations. The position is covered by the “Memorandum on Job Structure for Academic Staff at the Universities” of June 28, 2013.
 
The gross basic salary range for Assistant Professors is DKK 32,745 to DKK 34,476 per month (level 6 to 8). To the basic salary, a supplement could be negotiated, dependent on the candidate’s experience and qualifications. The employer will pay an additional 17.1 % monthly contribution to pension. 
 
The position is time limited to a 4 year period.

Shortlist: After the expiry of the deadline for applications, the authorized recruitment manager selects applicants for assessment on the advice of the Appointments Committee. Selected applicants are notified of the composition of the committee and each applicant has the opportunity to comment on the part of the assessment that relates to the applicant him/herself.
