Two postdoc positions at the Center for Translational Neuromedicine

Division of Glial Disease and Therapeutics, Center for Translational Neuromedicine, University of Copenhagen is looking for two highly motivated post docs. The first position offers the opportunity to work in a collaborative multi-disciplinary team engaged in research in The Ocular Glymphatic System. It is also the title (acronym: GlymphEye) of Prof. Maiken Nedergaard’s Horizon 2020, ERC Advanced Grant, which is sponsoring the post doc position. The other project investigates neuroglial signalling in awake behaving mice with emphasis on the role of astrocytes in transitions of brain state. 
Description of the center and the research group 
Our center is part of the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences of the University of Copenhagen and is located at the Panum Institute. We currently have 55 employees and students formed into two interacting groups: the Division of Glial Disease and Therapeutics and the Division of Cell and Gene Therapy. The Center comprises newly constructed laboratories with excellent facilities for all aspects of contemporary neuroscience. 
The research focus of the Division of Glial Disease and Therapeutics is on the basic biology of glial cells in the central nervous system, specifically astrocytes, and their role in several neurological and neuropsychiatric diseases, including stroke, spinal cord injury, epilepsy, tremor, ALS, depression, schizophrenia, and glaucoma. Our research is aimed at defining new strategies for the treatment of neurological diseases that target astrocytic dysfunction.

Description of the projects 
The first project will study the ocular glymphatic system. A rapidly evolving literature has shown that the major neurodegenerative diseases of the eye, macular degeneration and glaucoma, may also result from the toxicity of uncleared protein wastes, including amyloid-beta. Yet the eye, like the brain, has no traditional lymphatic vessels. The project will seek to link the biology of the glymphatic system in the brain to a similar fluid dynamic system in the eye, that has not yet been fully elucidated. Ultimately, we aim to assess the role of the ocular glymphatic system in diseases of the eye that have long been resistant to either understanding or treatment. 
The second project will study neuroglia signaling in awake behaving animals, primarily mice and link astrocytic Ca2+ signaling to cognitive functions and changes in brain states during the sleep-wake cycle. 
Job description 
The key tasks as post doc on the GlymphEye project (the first project) at the CTN are to: 
Use a variety of imaging approaches to map the ocular glymphatic system in mice and its dysfunction in murine models of glaucoma and macular degeneration. Also, the effect of the sleep-wake cycle is part of the project. The post doc will also supervise several PhDs working at various aspects of the murine glymphatic system.  
The key tasks as post doc on the neuroglial signaling project (the second project) at the CTN are to: 
Use 2-photon imaging and ion selective electrodes to map changes in astrocytic calcium signaling and extracellular ion concentrations (K+, Ca2+, Mg2+) during transition between wakefulness and natural sleep or anesthesia.  
For both positions: we expect you to be a highly motivated and ambitious scientist with a PhD degree in Neurobiology or equivalent. 
More specifically, we expect you to: 
Have experience in 2-photon imaging 
Perform rodent surgeries and training for awake imaging  
Have interest in astrocytes and fluid dynamics 
Have experience in the sleep-wake cycle regulation   
Perform quantitative immunohistochemistry 
Follow animal protocols and interact with the vivarium 
Be motivated for obtaining independent funding 
Have published in high-quality international peer-reviewed journals 
Have accredited course in laboratory animal science 
Be dedicated to outlined research protocols 
The post doc working on the ocular glymphatic system (the first project) should in addition have experience in studies of the eye. 
The successful candidates should be organized, self-motivated, result-oriented and capable of working independently in a collaborative setting. Excellent communication skills in English, both orally and written, is a prerequisite. Strong analytical, communication, organizational and computer skills are also required. 
Terms of employment 
The two successful candidates will be offered a full-time 2-year position. The position is covered by the Memorandum on Job Structure for Academic Staff. 
Terms of appointment and payment accord to the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and The Danish Confederation of Professional Associations on Academics in the State.
