Assistant professor at University of Copenhagen's Medical Museum

The Section for Science Communication of the Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Basic Metabolic Research (CBMR) is looking for an Assistant Professor to conduct a 3 year research and curation project focused on the material heritage of metabolic research; past and present. The project and the Section for Science Communication are based at Medical Museion; the University of Copenhagen’s medical museum and interdisciplinary research group (www.museion.ku.dk).    
The position will be based in the Section for Science Communication at Medical Museion, located in the center of Copenhagen. The Section currently consists of five staff members, integrated with the rest of the museum employees and regularly interacting with both the CBMR Communications Team and with Center scientists. The museum and Section are led by Prof Ken Arnold, previously director of programming at Wellcome Collection, London.  
CBMR’s scientific research investigates basic mechanisms of metabolism, including in diabetes and obesity. This basic research touches on fundamental questions about human nature; how we relate to our environment and experience our bodies. The Section’s communication work takes its starting point in the belief that biomedical research is thus an integral part of our culture and shared history. We investigate and communicate this vision through a focus on the material and aesthetic dimensions of science and its display.  
The Section is currently engaged in a major exhibition project Mind the Gut, funded in part by the Bikuben Foundation’s inaugural Vision Prize 2015. The exhibition explores the connections between brain, guts, and microbiome, taking starting points in both contemporary research and the long history of psychosomatics. This is the most recent example of a number of exhibition projects that have connected cultural history to contemporary metabolic research, all involving acquisition of contemporary instruments and/or specimens from CBMR. These projects have thus engaged with pressing museological questions about the future of collections, whilst also using these new acquisitions to help us reconsider the museum’s historical collections. The successful candidate would build on these experiences and take them in a new direction; within the thematic constraint the precise form and outcomes of the project are to be shaped in collaboration with the curatorial staff and the Head of Collections at Medical Museion.  
This is a fixed term position, running for 3 years. Starting date is 1 March 2018 or as soon as possible hereafter.  
Job description: 
The project should deliver new research about the material heritage of metabolic research both past and present; connecting the museum’s historical collections to contemporary acquisition strategy. One guiding question for the project is what a ‘metabolic object’ or a ‘metabolic collection’ might be; both in relation to scientific research and in relation to museological and/or artistic debates. Successful candidates will also be expected to get involved with the Section’s practical work; contributing to small exhibits, events, and social media platforms, and with limited teaching and supervision duties. They will collaborate closely with other members of the team and with scientists working at CBMR.  
Work tasks:  
  •  Research project focusing on metabolic objects and collections, and how to understand the relation between the museum collections and contemporary laboratories and clinics
  • Working closely with Center scientists to gather interviews and other media data on the recent history of metabolic research and significant objects in their laboratories
  • Producing research papers and other outcomes disseminating the results of the work; potentially including a book publication for a general audience
  • Contributing to communication activities
  • Contributing to the Section’s teaching and supervision responsibility; max 1 course with primary responsibility per year
  • Contributing to new object acquisitions and collection management
  • Participating in Center fora on behalf of the Section  
We expect that you have a relevant educational background, alongside demonstrable experience working in a museum or collection context. Relevant educational backgrounds could include e.g., humanities and social science disciplines such as history and philosophy of science or STS; communication or museum studies; cultural studies or anthropology; or biomedical science followed by practical experience in a museum.  
The working language at the Center is English, but the museum’s archive materials and catalogues are primarily in Danish, and Medical Museion produces communication activities in both Danish and English.  
Required qualifications:  
  • A PhD in a relevant field
  • Demonstrable experience with museum collections and/or curation
  • An interest in the future of museum collection management and acquisitions
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, able to facilitate discussion with scientists and to work well in interdisciplinary groups
  • Experience with or willingness to become engaged in online communication, including social media  
Additional desirable qualifications:
  • Ability to read and write Danish is strongly preferred; oral communication skills in Danish are a plus
  • A driver’s license is strongly preferred, for access to off-site collection storage
  • Experience with conducting, recording, and analysing interviews
  • Experience with taking simple film and photography for documentation purposes  
Terms of employment:  
Salary and other terms and conditions of appointment are set in accordance with the Agreement between the Ministry of Finance and AC (Danish confederation of Professional Associations). The position is covered by the Job Structure for Academic Staff at Universities 2013. The work week is 37 hours (including paid lunch).  
The positions will be at the level of assistant professor fellow. The gross basic salary range for assistant professor is DKK 32,745 to DKK 34,476 per month (level 6 to 8). To the basic salary, a supplement could be negotiated, dependent on the candidate’s experience and qualifications. An additional 17.1 % monthly contribution to pension will be paid by the employer.

About us:  
The Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Basic Metabolic Research (www.metabol.ku.dk) has been established at the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen, as an independent research center to conduct basic research on metabolism, alongside research-based and experimental public communication activities.  
The Center is founded by a DKK 885m unconditional grant from The Novo Nordisk Foundation with additional external funding of DKK 240m and consists of six scientific sections and a Center Administration. Currently, the Center has more than 200 employees and affiliated researchers. The Section for Science Communication is based at Medical Museion, located in the center of Copenhagen.
Recruitment Process:
In addition to the above material, the Assessment Committee may include further material in their assessment of the applicants.
