Research Assistant in synthetic biology at the DynaMo Center, Department of Plant and Environmental Sciences, University of Copenhagen

A 12-month position as Research Assistant is vacant at the DynaMo Center, a Center of Excellence funded by the Danish National Research Foundation. The Center is hosted by the Department of Plant and Environmental Sciences, Faculty of Science, University of Copenhagen and located at Thorvaldsensvej 40, 1871 Frederiksberg C, Denmark. 
 
The position commences 1 November 2017 or at a date thereafter of mutual agreement.  
 
Background  
Glucosinolates are natural products characteristic of vegetables in the cabbage family, e.g. broccoli and radish. Intake of glucosinolates via consumption of these vegetables has been associated with numerous health benefits. Large amounts of the vegetable have to be eaten to obtain the beneficial effects. This has primed a strong desire to intake glucosinolates as dietary supplements.  Our goal is to engineer microbial production of glucosinolates as a stable, rich source to enable intake of high and well-defined doses. 
 
Job description 
We are currently looking for a Research Assistant to assist us in our work aimed at engineering microbial production of glucosinolates. The person will have a great opportunity to advance his/her basic research skills. The tasks will be diverse and include:
  • Cloning of expression constructs for E. coli and yeast  
  • Generation of mutant strains for expression in E. coli and yeast 
  • Sample preparation for metabolomics and proteomics from engineered E.coli and yeast strains

Qualification requirements  
  • A relevant master’s degree e.g. within Biology, Biotechnology, Biochemistry or Molecular Biomedicin 
  • Experience with microbial organisms such as E. coli and/or yeast would be an advantage 
  • Advanced skills in molecular cloning are preferable  
  • Good English language skills 
Students who expect to complete their MSc program during the fall of 2017 are also invited to apply. If you have not yet obtained the MSc degree, in your cover letter please indicate when you expect to graduate and from which date you will be able to commence the position. The successful candidate may have the opportunity to seek a PhD position within the DynaMo Center. 
 
Key criteria for the assessment of candidates 
Special importance will be given to the following professional and personal qualifications of the applicant: 
  • Documented laboratory experience within molecular biology 
  • A strong motivation for learning basic research skills  
  • Well-developed collaborative skills 
Terms of employment 
The position is available for a 1-year period. The position is covered by the Memorandum on Job Structure for Academic Staff.  
 
Terms of appointment and payment accord to the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and The Danish Confederation of Professional Associations on Academics in the State.  
 
The starting salary is currently at a minimum DKK 336,126 including annual supplement (+ 17.1% pension). Negotiation for qualification salary supplement is possible.

After the expiry of the deadline, the authorized recruitment manager selects applicants for assessment on the advice of the Interview Committee. Afterwards an assessment committee will be appointed to evaluate the selected applications. The applicants will be notified of the composition of the committee and the final selection of a successful candidate will be made by the Head of Department, based on the recommendations of the assessment committee and the interview committee.
