Associate Professor in Regulation of Photosynthesis and Chloroplast Membrane Dynamic (211-0506)

Associate Professor of "Regulation of photosynthesis and chloroplast membrane dynamics"
Department of Plant and Environmental Sciences
Faculty of Science
University of Copenhagen

The Department of Plant and Environmental Sciences, faculty of Science, University of Copenhagen invites applications for a time unlimited position as Associate Professor in the area of "Regulation of photosynthesis and chloroplast membrane dynamics" from November 1st 2017 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Regulation of photosynthesis and chloroplast functions is a promising research area essential for urgent global challenges within food security, malnutrition, and the demand for sustainable bio-based production systems. Basic research in structure-function relationships of thylakoid membrane complexes allows bridging the molecular aspects of regulation of photosynthetic electron fluxes to its eco-physiological implications.

The Associate Professor will be part of the Section for Molecular Plant Biology which has a clear vision of unravelling plant function related to photosynthetic performance, as well as strong applications in plant biotechnology using synthetic biology approaches. The Associate Professor will dissect regulatory aspects of photosynthesis, regulatory networks, and chloroplast membrane dynamics. A comprehensive research approach combining molecular biology, protein biochemistry and molecular genetic techniques will be favorable. Basic findings will provide the knowledge to be used in synthetic biology approaches to improve for instance metabolon scaffolding in plastids. The research should have the potential for collaborations on future challenges in plant sciences like improving photosynthesis and productivity as well as in developing research based teaching.

Qualifications in the following areas are required:

  • Expert knowledge on membrane structures that regulate photosynthetic electron flow and modulate thylakoid plasticity in a light-dependent manner.
  • Documented experience with regulatory components and mechanisms that determine chloroplast membrane plasticity (e.g. photosynthetic fine-tuning mechanisms and structural membrane protein complexes).
  • Experience in synthetic biology approaches to produce high value compounds in photosynthetic hosts.
  • Experience with and an interest in science management.
  • Experience with research collaborations.
  • Documented ability to attract external funding.

Applicants are required to have university level teaching experience, documented teaching competencies and must be able to explain and reflect upon own teaching practice and portfolio. Formal pedagogical training or supervision equivalent to the University of Copenhagen teacher training programme for assistant professors is required.

Duties include the applicant’s own research, development of the field, assessment tasks, grant applications, and research management such as supervision and training of research fellows and other staff. The successful applicant must also teach, supervise, prepare and participate in examinations, and fulfill other tasks requested by the Department.

Assessment of applicants will primarily consider their level of documented, original scientific production at an international level, including contributions to developments in their field, as well as their documented teaching qualifications. Managerial and out-reach qualifications of applicants including ability to attract external funding will also be considered.
