Ph.d-fellow in "Extension of shelf-life of milk by mild processing"

The Department of Food Science, Faculty of Science at the University of Copenhagen seeks a Ph.d-fellow from 1st July 2017 or as soon as possible thereafter to work on a Ph.d project “Extension of shelf-life of milk by mild processing.

Project description

This PhD project is related to professorship in Dairy Process technology at University of Copenhagen and more specifically the research  “Platform for Novel Gentle Processing and Shelf-life Intelligence” that is a dynamic industrial multidisciplinary environment supported by Danish Dairy Research Foundation.

The research aims to demonstrate the technical feasibility and robustness of non-thermal processing as alternative to thermal pasteurisation and solving bottlenecks to ensure milk safety during storage.  The work will combine knowledge about non-thermal technologies, microbiology and milk structure.


Job description

Your key tasks as a PhD fellow at SCIENCE are:

  • Manage and carry through your experimentally based research project

  • Take PhD courses

  • Write scientific papers and your PhD thesis

  • Participate in international congresses

  • Teach and disseminate your research

Key critieria for the assessment of the candidates:

  • Master degree in dairy technology or non-thermal processing
    Experience in microbiology, food structure or food chemistry

  • Interest to perform experiments across scales (lab, pilot, full-scale)

  • Interest in understanding the effects of process on product properties

  • The grade point average achieved

  • Relevant work experience

  • Other professional activities

  • Language skills

  • Interpersonal skills

Formal requirements
The position is available for a 3-year period for applicants holding a relevant master degree

The successful applicant of the PhD scholarship must pass an enrolment in the SCIENCE Graduate School before the Faculty can finish the letter of employment. Graduate School of SCIENCE strives to give our students the best international career prospects within our main research areas.


Terms of employment

The position will be filled according to the agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The post is covered by the Protocol on Job Structure.
