PhD scholarship in sequencing based analysis of bacterial transcription

A PhD position is available at the Section for Computational and RNA biology, Department of Biology, University of Copenhagen. The position will be available as of August 1, 2017.

The position
The position is in the group of Associate Professor Jeppe Vinther and is part of the NextProd project funded by the Innovation Foundation Denmark. NextProd is a newly started collaboration between University of Copenhagen and Novozymes A/S aimed at improving bacterial cell factories used for enzyme production through the manipulation of ncRNAs. The Vinther Lab is focused on RNA based mechanisms involved in the control of cellular processes, in particular those that are related to disease and important for cell based production systems. The successful candidate will be responsible for performing sequencing based in-cell RNA structure probing and other types of global transcriptome analysis of Bacillus bacteria facing different stressful conditions and is expected to participate in the analysis of the resulting sequencing data.

For consideration, applicants must have:

  • An MSc in molecular biology, biochemistry or a similar field
  • Experience with experimental RNA work

In addition, the following will also be an advantage for this position:

  • Knowledge of bacterial RNA regulation and stress response
  • Experience with R or a similar program for data analysis
  • Publication in high-quality international peer-reviewed journals

The working language is English, thus excellent English-speaking, reading and writing skills are required.

Shortlisting procedures
After the expiry of the deadline for application, the authorized recruitment manager selects applicants for assessment on the advice of the interview committee. All applicants are then immediately notified whether their application has been passed for assessment by an expert assessment committee. Selected applicants are notified of the composition of the committee and each applicant has the opportunity to comment on the part of the assessment that relates to the applicant himself/herself.

The final selection of successful candidates will be made by the Head of Department, based on the recommendations of the assessment committee. The successful candidate will then be requested to formally apply for enrolment as a PhD student at the PhD school of the Faculty of Science, University of Copenhagen. For more information see:

Terms of employment
Terms of appointment and payment are in accordance with the agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Federation of Professional Associations (AC). The starting annual salary for candidates with an MSc degree will be a minimum of DKK 309,109 (April 2016 level) plus pension contribution, with the possibility of salary negotiation.
