Assistant professor in food microbiology with focus on cheese quality, safety and technology

Department of Food Science, Faculty of Science, University of Copenhagen, invites applications for a position as assistant professor from 1st May 2017 or as soon as possible thereafter.
The position is for a period of 3 years.

The position is anchored in a project for pushing the limits in cheese manufacture and ripening, which implies research obligations within: (i) advanced genotypic and phenotypic analysis methods; (ii) characterization and quantification of quality and safety risks involved in cheese manufacturing and ripening; (iii) Experimentally determination and selection of best scenario conditions to improve quality and safety during cheese processing and ripening; (iv) screening, selection and application of alternative bio-protective techniques.

The department has a strong platform within processing of cheeses as well as its analytical microbiology and chemistry that will support the project tasks. The research will be conducted in close collaboration with a number of internal and external partners, including industry, and experience with such collaboration is essential. The duties also include obligations with regards to publication/scientific communication and research-based teaching.

The assistant professor’s duties will be associated to the Section of Food Microbiology and Fermentation, and include teaching (B.Sc. and M.Sc. level) within the field of cheese microbiology and technology. To a limited extent this role may also include performance of other duties.

The candidate should have qualifications within several of the following areas

  • Development of analytical methods
  • Microbiological safety and quality
  • Cheese processing and technology
  • Health and Nutrition

In addition the appointed should have: 

  • A PhD degree related to the subject area of the position
  • Experience in managing of research projects with industrial focus
  • Documented research skills within analytical microbiology and chemistry within dairy science
  • Documented teaching skills within microbiological safety and quality
  • A collaborative mind set and excellent English skills
