PhD fellowship in the influence of antiresorptive drug holiday in cancer patients needing tooth extraction and oral rehabilitation of these patients

Department of Odontology, Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen
The Department of Odontology invites applications for a PhD fellowship. The candidate will work in the field of oral rehabilitation and maxillofacial surgery, and perform clinical oral examinations and oral rehabilitation of cancer patients on high dose antiresorptives. Thus, the candidate should be able to perform oral rehabilitation and simple maxillofacial surgery at this group of patients. The PhD fellowship will be a 4/5 position for a period of 4-years and will commence January 1, 2018 or as soon as possible thereafter.
Project/Scientific area
The project will be performed in collaboration between Department of Odontology, Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen and Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Rigshospitalet, Copenhagen.
The objectives of the study are (i) to clarify the meaning of high-dose antiresorptive drug holiday related to tooth extraction with primary mucosal closure in cancer patients and (ii) examine the feasibility of dental implant insertion in patients on high dose antiresorptive treatment. It is hypothesized that (i) antiresorptive drug holiday in relation to tooth extraction is not needed for patients, when primary mucosal closure is used. Furthermore, those (ii) patients on high dose antiresorptive treatment can have succesful oral rehabilitation with dental implants.
The project will be carried out under the supervision of:
Main supervisor: Professor Klaus Gotfredsen, PhD, Odont. Dr., Department of Odontology, University of Copenhagen.
Co-supervisor: Chief dentist, Morten Schiødt, Dr. Odont., Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Rigshospitalet, Copenhagen
The candidate must hold a relevant Master’s degree in dentistry (DDS) and must document clinical experience including practical skills and theoretical knowledge including experience in research settings. Furthermore, candidates with experience within the subject area will be preferred.
It is a prerequisite that the candidate can be enrolled as a PhD student at the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen and attached to the graduate programme in Muscoskeletal and Oral Sciences (MUSKOS).

The employment is at Department of Odontology part-time (4/5) for a four-year period corresponding to a three year fully financed PhD fellowship.
