Professor of Medical Image Analysis

The Department of Computer Science at the University of Copenhagen is seeking candidates for a full professorship in Medical Image Analysis. The new professor is expected to make a significant contribution to leadership in the Medical Image Analysis discipline within the Department of Computer Science. The professor must ensure that medical image analysis research, teaching, outreach, and clinical impact activities are thriving, and act as a mentor to young researchers. 
 
Outstanding applicants in all areas of medical image analysis will be considered, 
but research areas of special interest include: 
  • large scale population studies 
  • machine learning in medical image analysis 
  • mathematical foundation of medical image analysis 
 
We are looking for an outstanding, experienced researcher with an innovative 
mindset and intellectual curiosity to strengthen and complement the research profile of the department's Image Section. The section's research is concerned with image analysis, machine learning, natural language processing, information retrieval, their mathematical foundation, and their application, especially in medicine.  
 
The department values interdisciplinary research and teaching and is actively involved in several cross-faculty research projects and educational programmes. Thus, the successful candidate must be capable of and interested in facilitating cross-disciplinary interactions both within the Computer Science Department and across the university. The candidate is expected to engage in interdisciplinary teaching, including courses for students with a non-technical background, e.g., health sciences. 
 
The professor is expected to secure competitive external funding and build an internationally recognized research group.  
 
Selection Criteria 
 
  • A research doctorate or equivalent in Computer Science, applied math, statistics, or another relevant field. 
  • A demonstrated relevant world-class track record of high quality research and scholarship as evidenced by publications in internationally leading journals and conferences.  
  •  A track record of leadership, including leading of a research group, effective management of academic staff, organization of workshops and conferences, and involvement in outreach activities. 
  • A track record in attraction of research funding from competitive grant agencies and other sources including industry. 
  • Demonstrated ability to develop strong links with clinical partners. 
  • Drive, energy, and a vision for building and leading a world-class research group in medical image analysis. 
  • Demonstrated capacity to teach effectively across a range of subjects, including the capacity to supervise undergraduate and graduate students; and develop curriculum and learning resources. Experience in interdisciplinary teaching will be an advantage. Applicants are required to have university level teaching experience, documented teaching competencies and must be able to explain and reflect upon own teaching practice and portfolio. Formal pedagogical training or supervision equivalent to the University of Copenhagen teacher training programme for assistant professors is required. 
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other researchers, students, and technical-administrative staff. 
  • Relevant international experience will be an advantage. 
 
Key responsibilities 
 
Research 
  • Build and sustain strong research activities in medical image analysis, with a focus on interdisciplinary collaboration where appropriate. 
  • Obtain significant research funding from sources outside the University. 
  • Publish in top-tiered refereed outlets such as journals, books, monographs, and 
  • conference proceedings. 
  • Supervise PhD students. 
Teaching 
  • Coordinate and teach undergraduate and postgraduate courses as required by the Head of Department. 
  • Develop courses, programmes and learning resources in collaboration with other teachers and students. 
  • Supervise master’s students. 
Leadership and service 
  • Provide leadership in the discipline area of medical image analysis. 
  • Encourage and assist PhD students and young researchers to publish in top-tiered refereed journals, books, and refereed conference proceedings. 
  • Foster excellence in research and teaching. 
  • Undertake professional activities including membership of assessment and other committees, membership of editorial boards, organization of workshops and conferences. 
Outreach 
  • Develop collaborative relationships with clinics and industry. 
  • Engage in dissemination of research results to  the wider public.

Terms of employment 
The position is covered by the Memorandum on Job Structure for Academic Staff.  
 
Terms of appointment and payment accord to the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and The Danish Confederation of Professional Associations on Academics in the State.  
 
Commencing salary is currently DKK 596.794 including annual supplement (+ pension DKK 102.052). Negotiation for salary supplement is possible.
