PhD fellow in Biomass Science and Biotechnology

Department of Geoscience and Natural Resource, Faculty of Science at University of Copenhagen is offering a PhD scholarship in biomass science and biotechnology commencing 01.12.2017 or as soon as possible thereafter.  
 
Description of the scientific environment  
You will be part of dynamic group of 20 researchers and work in a scientific area where Danish research has an international lead position. The position involves collaboration with both academia and industry in Denmark and Brazil.  
 
Project description  
The position is part of Danish-Brazilian collaboration within biotechnology with the aim of developing the use of enzymes for plant biomass conversion. The partners are University of Copenhagen and University of Sao Paulo, and the project is named “Enzymes and electrons at work – dual processing of carbohydrates and lignin producing prebiotic oligosaccharides and bioactive lignins”. In the project, oxidative enzymes will be studied with the purpose of understanding their interactions and reactions with biopolymers and to develop applications potentially in collaboration with industrial partners. There will be a close collaboration between the partners with mutual visits and research stays.

Job description  
The position is available for a 3-year period and your key tasks as a PhD student at SCIENCE are:  
 
• To manage and carry through your research project  
• Attend PhD courses  
• Write scientific articles and your PhD thesis  
• Teach and disseminate your research  
• To stay at the Brazilian partners for at least 6 months during the 3-year project.  
• Work for the department  
 
Formal requirements  
Applicants should hold an MSc degree in natural sciences such as biology or chemical engineering with good results and good English skills. As criteria for the assessment of your qualifications emphasis will also be laid on previous publications (if any) and relevant work experience.  
The preferred candidate should furthermore have:  
-Experience with the use of enzymes  
-Knowledge and experience on plant biomass  
-Good knowledge of Danish, fluent in writing as in speech  
 
Terms of employment  
The position is covered by the Memorandum on Job Structure for Academic Staff.  
 
Terms of appointment and payment accord to the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and The Danish Confederation of Professional Associations on Academics in the State.  
 
The starting salary is currently at a minimum DKK 312.879 including annual supplement (+ pension up to DKK 43.219). Negotiation for salary supplement is possible.

The main criterion for selection will be the research potential of the applicant and the above mentioned skills.
